The 3.0V6 and ST220 use the same basic engine, there are no mechanical differences. The 5 Speed ST220 had a second inlet to the airbox but this was deleted for 6 speed models so it didn't do much anyway. The major difference is the exhaust system. The 3.0V6 standard models use the same exhaust system as the 2.5V6.

Mk3 Mondeo V6 was called Zetec S V6, with same engine as Mk2 IIRC, and yes, the ST 220 is much quicker. Mk3 was available with 2.5 or 3.0 V6 but only the ST220 had revised inlets and 220-odd brake .
